BARNARD Castle Farmers’ Market made it third time lucky, scooping a top national award.

The monthly market was shortlisted as a finalist in the Farmers’ Market of the Year Awards 2023 run by the Farm Retail Association.

It was the third time Barney has been shortlisted.

Although Barney lost out to bigger markets in 2021 and 2022, they were named winners at an awards ceremony in Peterborough on Tuesday last week, beating fellow finalists Abbey Leys, in Cheshire, and Marylebone, in London, to this year’s title.

A spokesperson for Barney Farmers’ Market said: “Wow. We did it. We are so excited to say we’ve been named Farmers’ Market of the Year.

“A huge thank you to our brilliant traders, committee members and to all the amazing people of Barnard Castle and beyond, who support and visit this wonderful market month after month.

“Of course, not forgetting our friend Carol Parker who stepped down as market manager in November and has done an incredible job of running our farmers’ market over the last five years.

“Celebration time for us now. Then we’ll see you back on the cobbles on April 6.”
