CHILDREN from eight different dale primary schools enjoyed taking part in a sports festival at Staindrop Academy.

The children, who spent the summer term learning about athletics, were able to join in a variety of activities relating to different aspects of the sport. Children from Woodland, Cotherstone, Butterknowle, Ingleton, Evenwood, Gainford, St Mary’s Catholic and Green Lane primary schools took part.

There were games of Octopus, Stick in the Mud as well as relay style races, throwing events and long jump. Adam Chrowstowski, PE teacher at Staindrop Academy, organised the event, which was set over two days.

He said: “I teach sport at 11 different primary schools in the dale and this is just a wonderful way to bring them all together at the end of the year.”

“We selected some students from years seven and eight from Staindrop Academy to take part in a leadership programme. For the past few weeks we’ve been showing them how to help and teach the younger students and they’re helping out here today.”

Tessa Fenoughty, head teacher at Butterknowle Primary, praised the organisers for making it such an inclusive event. She said: “It is something which is very important to us that all our pupils can take part.”
