RECRUITMENT DRIVE: Aldbrough St John have maintained two teams in the Darlington and District Cricket League for the coming season despite conceding a number of second XI fixtures last year

DEFENDING champions Haughton will begin their 2019 campaign with an away game at West Park RA.

Raby Castle, who challenged Haughton for much of last season, start their fixtures with a home tie against Richmondshire IV.

The season begins on Saturday, April 20, and this year the district league will comprise three divisions, with 12 teams in the top tier and ten in divisions B and C.

Spennymoor, whose season starts with a trip to Middleton St George, were promoted to the A division at the end of last season, with Middleton-in-Teesdale dropping down.

Barningham start their A division campaign with a short trip to Piercebridge to take on Cliffe CC, while Aldbrough St John welcome Nunthorpe.

Haughton’s second team were crowned champions of the B division last season and they begin the defence of their title at home to Raby Castle II.

Middleton get an extra week’s preparation. They are without a fixture on April 20 and start their campaign a week later with a trip to Oxbridge.

In the C division, Etherley will be hoping to build on an encouraging set of results last season which saw the young team finish fourth.They host Eryholme on the opening day aiming to start with a win.

Newly reformed Lands begin their campaign at home to Aldbrough St John II.

Aldbrough will be hoping their recruitment campaign has paid off by the start of the season.

The club has maintained two teams in the league, despite conceding six second team fixtures last season due to a lack of players.

In the cup competitions, Barningham have been drawn away to Cliffe and Raby Castle head to Middleton St George in the first round of the A division cup on Thursday, May 9.

The first round of the B division cup, on Wednesday, May 15, has thrown up a dale derby between Raby Castle II and Middleton-in-Teesdale, while Etherley travel to East Cowton in the C division cup on Thursday, May 16.

The first round of the Cec Leece knock-out cup takes place on Monday, June 17, and sees Lands visit Cockerton, Etherley host Cliffe and Middleton-in-Teesdale at home to Oxbridge.
