TWICKENHAM BOUND: Rob Stanwix
TWICKENHAM BOUND: Rob Stanwix

THREE members of Barnard Castle RUFC’s 1st XV are heading to Twickenham this weekend.

Rob Stanwix, Michael Hughes and Chris Wearmouth are part of the Durham squad which has made it through to the division two final of the Bill Beaumont Cup – England Rugby’s county championship.

Durham will play Warwickshire at Twickenham on Sunday, May 27, after the main event of the day when an England XV takes on the Barbarians.

To qualify for Twickenham, Durham won all three of their group games.

The three Barney players were in the team which defeated Cumbria 64-5 earlier this month.

Rob Stanwix had to miss out due to a family wedding when Durham thrashed Staffordshire 99-7, but all three were in the squad for the final pool match, a 32-10 win against Leicestershire in a match played at Billingham RUFC on Saturday.

All three players are forwards, and contributed to an excellent season which saw Barnard Castle compete for promotion from Durham/ Northumberland 1 before being pipped at the last. They were also part of the Barney team which lifted the Durham County Intermediate Cup.

The Durham squad will travel to London on Saturday to prepare for the big game the following day.
