PUPILS from St Mary’s Primary School, in Barnard Castle, are celebrating after being crowned champions at a cricket tournament.

Two teams from the school took part in the Staindrop School Cluster cricket tournament, with one taking top honours.

The team, captained by Charlie Howell, were level on points with Green Lane Primary School but were declared overall winners because they made more runs than their opponents.

The captain, along with William Bellas, were top scorers for the team, which was a mix of boys and girls between the ages of seven and nine.

Their teacher Annmarie Ainsley said: “We are very proud of them. Charlie was an excellent captain”

She added that the children were exceptionally well behaved.

Charlie said: “It feels quite magical to be champions.”
