ATHLETICS

ATHLETES will get the unique opportunity to run alongside an Olympic gold medal winner next month as part of a series of forest running events.

The Forestry 100 Running series is a brand new series of 10K events which has been created to celebrate the 100 years of forestry, by the Forestry Commission and to help inspire a deeper appreciation of forests.

The first event in the series, the Hamsterley Forest 10k, will see former Olympian and World Champion, Steve Cram, not only open the race, but run alongside participants on Sunday, April 7.

Mr Cram, who helped set up the Kielder Marathon, which also celebrates its tenth birthday this year, said: “I’m a huge fan of exploring the outdoors on foot, and trail running through the forests on our doorsteps is a great way to combine both.

“It was this passion that helped me set up the Kielder Marathon, taking in some of the most stunning routes through the forest trails.

“The Forestry 100 series will be perfect training if you’re interested in joining us for our own birthday celebration in Kielder later this year. I hope to see you all in Hamsterley Forest in April.”

Alex MacLennan, North East recreation and public affairs manager for the Forestry Commission, said: “It’s fantastic Steve has signed up for the Hamsterley 10k.

“We know how much he enjoys running in the forest and we hope his participation will encourage others to join him on the start line.

“If you haven’t tried running or walking in the forest yet, now’s an excellent time to start.”

The Hamsterley 10K is £20 to enter, £18 for UK Athletics affiliated runners. Runners must be 15 years and older. Registration starts from 8am on the morning with the race due to start at 9am. To book your spot to run alongside Steve Cram ring 03000 680400.
