NORTH Yorkshire ran out winners when the cream to the region’s young cross country athletes descended on Barnard Castle School.

Runners had to contend with rain, sleet and snow along with an increasingly difficult course which became increasingly heavy throughout the day.

Teams representing hosts Durham North Yorkshire, Cumbria, Northumberland and Cleveland took part in the annual Northern Schools inter-county cross country championships.

North Yorkshire finished 56 points ahead of their hosts, with Cumbria just four points behind in third place and Northumberland fourth.

Barnard Castle School’s Daniel Richardson, who two weeks previously had won the Durham schools race for year seven runners, finished an excellent fifth in the inter-county event, just 19 seconds behind winner Tom Slane, from Northumberland.

Performance of the day went to Cleveland's Josh Cowperthwaite in the senior boys’ race.

He lived up to the number one billing on his vest, destroyed the field and finished 43 second ahead of Cumbria’s Joe Dugdale.
