SUNDAY, September 16, heralded the fourth running of the Stainton Fun Run, an event which includes 1.2K and 5k courses.

It acts as a fundraiser for the village hall and a commemoration of the life of Christine Brass, a Stainton resident, staunch supporter of the village hall and keen runner.

The event hosted some 130 runners keen to test their mettle against some gruelling climbs over varying terrain.

The 1.2K event saw some 50 contestants pitting themselves against the Stainton course with all racing home to rapturous applause and a bespoke finishers’ medal.

The 5k event sees participants undertake a gruelling test which combines differing terrains with considerable ascent and decline.

As with the 1.2km there was a significant increase for uptake in this race which saw the fleet of foot, and, perhaps, those less so, joined in an appreciation of a great course in fine surroundings.

The event prides itself on delivering an unrivalled friendly atmosphere which ensures all present will enjoy not only the races but the welcome that awaits runners at the village hall, which sees all participants rewarded for their efforts with a breakfast bun.

First home in the 1.2K race was Stainton villager Oliver Bentley closely followed by first female Thea Fletcher.

The 5K race was won for the second year running by familiar face Dean Newton who retains the Christine Brass Memorial Trophy.

First female home was local girl Shona Haston who has consistently supported the event and blazed a trail the finish.

Other finishes of note were Josh Mawer and Jonathan Proud, who both looked strong throughout and gave creditable chase to the eventual winner.

The event was supported by local sponsors Up and Running (Darlington), McFarlane’s family butchers, Honeyman Group and Morrisons.

Thanks also go to Dennis Hinchcliffe and his son Gareth for the provision of facilities which enabled the event to happen and Erdinger Beers for their selection of this event as a worthy community race. Event organisers also wish to thank all race personnel – marshalls, event timers and medal presentation team – for their endeavours, without which the event would not have been possible.
