TEENAGER Cara Weddell capped her successful season by qualifying for a prestigious golf trip to Spain.

The 17-year-old nine-handicapper will fly to Malaga for a week in November to take part in the Junior European Open.

“I’m really excited about it,” said Cara, a sixth form student at Darlington’s Queen Elizabeth College, who took up the game aged ten.

Her father, Michael, is also a Barnard Castle member and Cara added: “The only time I’ve played abroad was on holiday in the USA with dad.

“I booked the Spain trip by shooting 84, 11 over par, in a qualifier at Brass Castle, Middlesbrough. I finished second but the winner had already qualified. I played the back nine in two over.”

Two boys and one girl qualified from each regional event and will have all green fees and accommodation paid for.

Two more Barnard Castle members through to the finals of a national competition are six-handicapper Mark Parvin and big-hitting Mally Craig, who plays off 12.

They will be at Slaley Hall on October 6-8 for the Daily Mail Foursomes finals after winning their seventh round match 4 & 3 against Billingham.

Club professional Darren Pearce has also enjoyed recent success, finishing joint first in pro-ams at Morpeth and the tough Berwick links known as Goswick.

“I was surprised to do so well because I haven’t been able to practise because of arthritis in my wrist,” said Darren.

“Every shot was painful at Goswick, where I shot a one under par 71 in windy conditions. I was four under on 67 at Morpeth.”

Two club members holed in one last week, both from about 165 yards. Former captain Rennie Wood used a six-iron at the eighth, while Maurice Eustace took a seven wood at the third. For both it was the second ace of their careers.

The third round of the Hall Trophy, a mixed greensome, was won on Sunday by Nick and Sue Seddon, who finished five clear with 43 points.

Another husband and wife team, Paul and Toni Upton, took second place just ahead of Colin Stead and George-Anne Brooks.
