BOWLS

Robert Littlefair Trophy

This competition is played in the Jumbles format much loved by Robert and 29 players were trying to get their hands on the trophy.

Played over five games of four ends and changing team members after every game leads to some interesting results and, depending on the random draw, literally anyone can win.

No one made the magic ten points but five players reached eight then it went to shots difference.

In runner up spot was John Tallentire with +14, but the winner with +17 was Brian Smurthwaite.

Men’s Vets

THE A team entertained Bedale and won 3-1 taking the long game 55-47.

John Robinson, Alan Wearmouth and Neil Watters made up the top rink winning 24-12.

The B team were away at Darlington Hundens A and for half of the match they were either in front or containing the opposition.

Unfortunately the wheels came off and Hundens went on to win 4-0 taking the long game 79-43.

Thursday Evening League

THE A team welcomed Bishop Auckland and ended the night winning 4-1. John Wearmouth, Peter Shovlin and Alan Wearmouth made up the top rink winning 22-13 helping Barney to the long game 76-68. The B team were away at Darlington Hundens again playing their only evening team.

Despite a brave effort and signs of improvement the result still went to Hundens 5-0.

Ladies

IN the semi-final of the Evening League competition Barnard Castle were at home to Darlington Lodge Ladies.

Top rink Gillian Harle, Joan Smith and Margaret Sparrow dominated their opponents to the extent that when Mary Lambert, June Parkin and Flora Wright got to 12 shots all on their penultimate end, Lodge Ladies conceded.

We go forward to the final at Bedale on September 1.

Points were shared in the home match against Richmond in the Afternoon League.

Ann Hodgson, Beryl Embleton and Rene Armstrong played consistently well to win 21-7 and the home team took the long game 42-38.

The ladies club competition for the Gold Cup was won by June Parkin, with Mary Lambert as runner-up. Ladies president Gillian Harle officiated.
