STANDING DOWN: Susan Coffer
STANDING DOWN: Susan Coffer

THE manager of Barnard Castle’s arts centre is to leave after two years in the job.
Susan Coffer helped steer The Witham into calmer waters after the centre was saved from closure by a public appeal for funds.
She brought a wealth of experience to the post, accumulated from 25 years in the arts and culture sector that saw her work her way up from theatre box office assistant to executive director at Northern Stage, Newcastle.
With The Witham being closed for much of the period since last March due to the pandemic, and with uncertainty as to when the centre will be allowed to reopen, Ms Coffer has decided now is the time to stand down.
Shelagh Avery, chairwoman of trustees at The Witham, said much had been achieved during Ms Coffer’s tenure.
“Highlights of her first year included the Enriching Later Life project Creative Age, one of the outcomes of which was the delightful exhibition of Teesdale-related models that filled the gallery.
“Another was the dance project, Falling on Your Feet, that offered a creative space for over 60s, who were living independently, to come together to enjoy dance classes and socialise.”
Ms Avery added: “Susan has also been instrumental in securing funding, particularly through the pandemic, that has helped see The Witham through this difficult nine months.”
Ms Coffer also worked to develop The Witham’s programme and expand its audience.
“Obviously, the circumstances of 2020 did not allow this to happen to the extent that Susan and the trustees envisaged,” added Ms Avery.
“While it may be possible to introduce a limited programme later in 2021, realistically, it is likely to be quite some time before a full programme of cultural activity will be on offer.
“Sadly, but understandably, Susan has decided to leave the team in early April. The trustees hope that current lockdown restrictions will be lifted by then so that they can mark Susan’s departure in a social gathering of Witham staff and volunteers.”
Ms Avery said that with The Witham remaining closed due to the current lockdown, no immediate successor would be sought to take Ms Coffer’s place.
In the meantime, Suzanne Wallace, manager of the cafe and bar, will take on more managerial responsibilities.
