VILLAGE FUN: Last year’s carnival

ONE of Teesdale’s largest carnivals is looking for more volunteers so they can put on more events during the year.

Staindrop Carnival boasted more than 200 people in its grand procession last year, making it among the biggest in Teesdale. But after taking on new events on the village green last year, more people are needed to help out.

Tony Smith, from the carnival committee, said: “We still have ten members but we are looking to have about 15.

“What we are trying to do is make it easier for the events committee because we have a lot more events during the year. It is also about giving more people an opportunity to get involved.”

Among the events the committee organises are car boot sales, picnics on the green and an annual duck race on Langley Beck. This year they plan to bring forward the duck race from carnival weekend to Easter.

The carnival has grown in recent years and along with the procession, there is a fun fair, children’s area with face-painting and Punch and Judy, a market and classic cars.

Mr Smith said: “We want to expand the market and maybe have a flea market. Last year we had classic tractors as well and we want to expand that and maybe have some classic busses.”

Friends of Staindrop School also join in the carnival by hosting a sports and music day on the Sunday. This year’s carnival takes place on July 13. In June the committee will hold its carnival king and queen night at the Scarth Memorial Hall, which takes the form of a music night.

Mr Smith said: “It gives people an opportunity to put their names forward to be carnival king and queen.”
