TWO new shelters couldn’t have come at a better time for children at Middleton-in-Teesdale Primary School ahead of a week of heavy

rain.

The shelters were put up at the main school entrance as well as the nursery section’s door to provide refuge for children waiting to enter, as well as parents waiting to collect their children.

Organised through the Friends of Middleton School, the project was made possible by Middleton Forge and the Stephen Mitchell Memorial Fund which each donated a shelter.

The shelters were designed and built by Middleton Forge’s operations manager David Longstaff, with the bases being dug out by Peter

Henderson, of H&M Construction.

Mr Henderson said: “Faye Docherty, of the friends group, gave us an overview of what they wanted and we took it from there.”

The shelters were installed during the Easter break but were officially unveiled last week after plaques were put up in gratitude to the donors.

Christine Mitchell, of the Stephen Mitchell Memorial Fund, was impressed with the new structures.

She said: “They’re great. There are a lot of people who have said how brilliant they are because the children come in at different times so those who were waiting to get in were getting wet.”

Ms Docherty added that apart from offering refuge from the rain, the shelters were also an ideal place to put up school notices and other items.
