BIG BASH: John Jackson, headteacher when Evenwood Primary School's nursery was opened, takes centre stage surrounded by parents, teachers and pupils

A PRIMARY school has marked the 25th anniversary of its nursery by revamping the outdoor area.

Children at Evenwood Primary School can now enjoy a new mud kitchen and reading and maths cupboards after a significant refurbishment.

An open day was held at the school on Saturday, July 7, to showcase the new facility and to celebrate the nursery’s milestone birthday.

The headteacher at the time, John Jackson, and pupils who were among the first to attend the nursery were guests on the day.

Event organiser Jill Swinbank also tracked down as many pupils from the first year as possible and presented a “then and now” wall to show how they had progressed.

Among them was Mohit Dergan who completed a masters in chemistry at Newcastle University before working for several years as a scientist. He is currently completing a PhD at Imperial College London.

Mrs Swinbank paid tribute to parents who helped create the new outdoor area including Matthew Vollans, who built the mud kitchen, and Paul Geddis, of C&A Roofing, who helped with the specially designed cover for the sandpit.

A donation from Evenwood Parish Council went towards the maths and reading cupboards. Mrs Swinbank said: “It is an ongoing project – we still have bits to do.”

By coincidence the nursery’s current headteacher, Charlotte Hill, is the daughter-in-law of the nursery’s first head Liz Hill.
