A NONAGENARIAN’S birthday celebrations netted two charities cash donations totalling £600.

When Trevor Douglas marked his 90th birthday with family and friends at the Scarth Hall, in Staindrop, instead of presents he asked that people make donations to charity.

Mr Douglas, who partied the evening away with more than 100 of his close friends and family at a special karaoke themed party on Saturday, February 1, said he was overwhelmed by their generosity.

He and his daughter, Dorothy Evans, handed over cheques of £300 to Macmillan Nurses and St Teresa's Hospice last week.

Mrs Evans said: “He was over the moon and was quite emotional when he presented the cheques to both of the charities. He chose those charities as they are local. He wanted to keep it local and there are so many people who have been touched by cancer.”

During the party, organised by his four daughters, Mr Douglas encouraged everyone to get up and sing. He himself belted out his favourite tune, The Carnival is Over by Judith Durham.
