A GROUP of knitters are collaborating with The Bowes Museum’s For King and Country project to produce First World War wartime garments to help people affected by conflict.

The idea for Barnard Castle’s Knit and Natter group to get involved was developed by project co-ordinator Judith Phillips. She said: “During the war a lot of men and women did knitting. They knitted socks, gloves, balaclavas and many other things.”

Patterns for all skill levels have been gleaned from the book Knitting for Tommy – Keeping the Great War Solider Warm. Members are making blankets and garments.

The group, which generally numbers about half a dozen, is also knitting small poppies, cornflowers and marguerites which will be used as part of artwork that hangs in the museum’s entrance hall.

The artwork was inspired by writer Robert Graves’ description of his experiences in France during the war. Ms Phillips said all the garments and blankets made by the group will be given to charities that support people who have been affected by war across the globe.

The group meets every other Thursday in the museum’s music room.

Ms Phillips said: “We would love for people to drop in and knit a few lines.”
