CARNIVAL TIME: Members of Staindrop Guides stepped back in time to the groovy 1970s for their entry into this year’s Staindrop Carnival – the 100th time the fun event had been staged

THE sun shone on Staindrop as residents celebrate the 100th staging of their village carnival, put off due to lockdowns for two years.
The carnival procession was well-attended with crowds lining the streets and edge of the village greens to watch as the colourful parade, which had all manner of innovative costumes and characters from well-known cartoon characters to Jedi warriors.
Following the procession, judging of the fancy dress competition took place on North Green where fittingly cousins Harrison Bussey, 4, and Theo Jackson, won first place in the pairs contest dressed as celebratory carnival cakes.
Castle Kindergaten won the group category, with friends and new parents Louise and Matthew Stones, Britt Bloomfield and Nancy Stewart inning the family section with their innovative entry of Three Little Pigs.
A five-hour road closure allowed residents and visitors to meander between activities on both greens without the worry of passing cars and was appreciated by families with young children.
Susan Stamp, carnival committee chairwoman, said: “It has been a very successful week, but I don’t think people appreciated the work that goes into organising things and we do need more people to get involved.
“There are seven of us on the committee and it takes a lot of organising so we’d love to get more people to help out.”
