T’S ALL SCONE MAD: Shona Robinson has baked hundreds of scones and helped raise more than £800 for the TCR Hub’s care packages scheme to help the needy and vulnerable

THE ‘Fairy Scone mother” has raised more than £800 during Covid-19 restrictions for a scheme that is providing essential items for struggling families.

hona Robinson, who runs Oliver Twist’s Sandwich Bar, in Barnard Castle, has been doing a scone drop every Friday to raise cash for The Hub’s care package scheme during lockdown.

Mrs Robinson, who closed the sandwich shop on Mother’s Day and put four members of staff on furlough, has been whipping up an ever-increasing number of cheese and fruit scones each week alone.

She said: “There have been a few weeks I haven’t put any notices out on social media as I have had so many pre-orders and I still get people wanting more. “We’re up to about 100 scones a week now.”

For each scone Mrs Robinson bakes and sells, £1 is donated to the care packages. Now as lockdown restrictions easing Mrs Robinson is getting ready to reopen and is planning to be back in business on Wednesday, July 1.

She added: “I’ve rearranged the counters and have got specialist screens ordered and the entire place has been thoroughly cleaned down. “We’re hoping to maintain our normal opening hours but may have to adapt as I’m looking at introducing a special breakfast menu as well. “I’ll be continuing to support the Hub Care Packages in whatever way I can.”
