FULL SPEED AHEAD: Craig Hope, organiser of Darlington’s first Motorsport Day

A COMMITTED petrolhead from Staindrop has organised Darlington’s first ever Motorsport Day this weekend.

Craig Hope, who has been associated with Croft Circuit for more than two decades and has marshalled the start-line and pit for the past 15 years, decided to put on the day to show people what motorsport there is on their doorsteps.

The event, which will feature vehicle stands, live demonstrations and a visit by stunt driver and British Autotest champion Paul Swift, will be held in Darlington market place on Saturday, April 27, between 10.30am and 3.30pm.

Mr Hope said: “It is a family day where you can pop down, look at and interact with the displays, watch some live demonstrations, talk to our officials and learn more about what our region has to offer for the lover of all things motorsport. Some may be surprised to find out what's just around the corner.

“We have everything from an Aston Martin GT4 to carts. Everyone is local. We even have a remote-control club from Shildon – remote-control is the cheapest form of motorsport.

“They are going to set up a demonstration area so everyone can come along and see what they are able to do.”

Mr Hope, who is a member of Darlington and District Motorsport Club, said the club’s rescue team will also be doing a demonstration.

The team joins rallies and has equipment to cut drivers out of their vehicles if there is an accident and there is a doctor on board to give medical attention.

Also involved will be the stock-car racing from Barford, near Staindrop.

Mr Hopes said: “A lot of people don’t know what they do.”
