PUPILS learning about recycling celebrated after their appeal to local businesses helped secure eco-friendly bins.

Children at Staindrop Primary School were learning about the environment and the importance of recycling last term when they realised they didn’t have any dedicated bins at the school.

With the help of teachers and staff they decided to write to local companies to ask for assistance.

Teaching assistant Kay Brown said: “We didn’t have any recycling bins at the school and as the children were learning about how to

be more environmentally friendly we decided to raise funds to purchase some.”

The children wrote to 15 companies and were delighted when nine of them responded. Mrs Brown added: “With the donation from one company, John Dickinson Transport, we were able to purchase all of the bins we needed, but the £560 raised means the school is fully equipped with the special bins.”

She said the children, teachers and staff at the school were all grateful for the generosity of those who donated including Lord Barnard, the Teesdale Mercury, GlaxoSmithKline and MP Helen Goodman.

The bins, which have large smiley faces, have already been installed at the school and children are busy learning about which products can and cannot be recycled.
