Old Chapel Project in Cotherstone set up pop-up cafe this weekend

MORE than £40,000 has been raised since a community group launched its share issue to help turn former chapel into a village shop, café and heritage centre in Cotherstone.

The Cotherstone Old Chapel Project, now a community benefit society (CBS) set a target of raising £100,000 to lease, renovate and run the former Methodist church as a community venture.

Just three weeks the group have raised nearly half of the total required to see the project go forward.

The group are keen to encourage more people to purchase shares, priced at £10 each with a minimum investment of £50 and have organised a pop-up café in the chapel on Saturday (October 9) between 10am and 3pm.

Complimentary barista coffee and tea will be on offer as well as range of homemade bread, soups, scones, sausage rolls, biscuits and cakes and team members from the group will be on hand to answer questions on the project.

Plans for the building will be on show along with displays of what is envisaged for the project.

Chris Tarpey, chair of the Cotherstone Old Chapel Project management group, said: “If you haven’t already bought some community shares then we urge you to do so if you can.

“We have been overwhelmed with donations of equipment, furniture and local historical artefacts and momentum is building. We have raised more than £40,00 in community shares, but we still need to reach our £100,000 target to be able to go forward.”

The share offer is open to all individuals over 16 years and runs until Monday, November 8.
