A COCKFIELD youngster who started his own poster campaign to tackle problems in his village has been recognised with a Barnard Castle Police young hero award.

The award is made monthly to recognise work that young people are doing for the benefit of their community.

The latest award was made to Max Corner who was so concerned about dog fouling, speeding and littering around his home, near Lynesack, that he started a campaign to change behaviour by putting up hand-drawn posters on lampposts.

A special assembly was called at Cockfield Primary School on Friday, September 27, where police inspector Ed Turner and former Barnard Castle mayor Cllr Sandra Moorhouse presented the eight-year-old with the award.

Insp Turner said: “Max thoroughly deserves this award and has shown how valuable our young people are in driving forward positive change to help keep our communities safe. He should be very proud of himself and we look forward to seeing more of his posters in the future.”

Residents have called at his home to congratulate him on his efforts and county bosses have also heaped praise on his work.

The 12 monthly winners of the police young hero awards will be invited to an event at Barnard Castle Police station next year where a young hero of the year will be announced.
