BARELY a week after winning gold, volunteers were hard at work preparing for their village for next’s year Northumbria-in-Bloom competition.
A band of six avid gardeners were back on Middleton-in-Teesdale’s green planting more than 600 daffodil bulbs in a bid to impress the judges in 2019. They had won a third consecutive gold award for the village only a few days before.
Organiser Pam Phillips said along with the additional daffodils, the group would be filling the village planters with 200 tete-a-tete daffodils, 1,000 mixed crocus and 100 Kauffman tulips. She said: “We do a little each week so it is not such an onerous task.”
Although the group has yet to decide on a theme for next year’s competition, there are plans to focus on drought-proof plants following this year’s summer.
