HISTORY COMES ALIVE: Youngsters from Hamsterley Primary visited the Vindolanda Roman museum near Hexham

THE Key Stage 2 children from The Durham Dales Federation schools were excited to join up at Vindolanda to learn more about their history topic last week.

Hamsterley Primary School became part of the federation in September, joining St John’s Chapel, Wearhead and Rookhope primary schools.

The day was spent between Vindolanda and The Roman Army Museum, at Hexham. The children explored the fort finding out about the officer’s residences, barrack buildings and the headquarters building, before looking outside the fort where evidence shows some buildings were used as a butcher’s shop and a tavern.

At The Roman Army Museum children took part in a Roman classroom interacting with the Roman teacher Velius Longus, via a hologram, where they learnt Latin, maths and morals.

They also spent time looking at the artefacts on display to help future lessons. Darryl Todd, deputy head at Hamsterley Primary School, explained: “It was an exciting and informative day, not only to bring the Roman topic alive for the children by seeing the actual places where they lived and worked, but also to meet the children from other schools.”

The schools will continue to join together for a range of activities during the year.
