THIS year marks the 100th staging of Staindrop Carnival and organisers are hoping to make it the biggest ever.

However, they say more people need to come forward to help out on the day.

The centenary carnival was due to take place in 2020, but had to be cancelled twice because of Covid-19 restrictions.

This year’s event will be held on July 9, starting at 1pm.

Carnival chairwoman Susan Stamp said along with the fancy dress parade, people can look forward to a fun fair, market stalls, a pipe band, ukulele band, Morris dancers, jugglers and a display of classic cars and tractors.

There will also be refreshments in the Scarth Memorial Hall along with a tombola and raffle.

Those taking part in the parade will meet along Beckside before setting off down the main street, which will be closed from 1pm until 2pm.

Volunteer Nicky Cullen said: “We would like a big parade. If you like to dress up and be a bit daft then come along. It is the 100th carnival and the first since Covid, so if you feel the need to dress up, please join in.”

However, more volunteers are needed.

Ms Stamp said: “There are only seven of us [committee members] so we are struggling. We need a bit of muscle to help on the day, like putting up and taking down marquees.”

She added that people are also needed to mark the procession route and to show people where to go.

Businesses are also being asked to help with donations towards the tombola and raffle.

Anyone who can offer prizes or can help out on the day can ring Ms Stamp on 07825 395431.
