A GARDEN club aimed at teaching children to grow their own food has become over-subscribed just weeks after being set up.

A group of 14 children are learning the art of planting seeds and growing vegetables and fruit at the TCR Hub, Barnard Castle.

The Children’s Garden Club meets every Monday at 4pm.

Organiser Suzanne Thomas said: “It is an hour of getting hands dirty and then a nature walk. It has been fantastic. They are very knowledgeable and they already know that nature is important.”

She added the along with growing crops, children were also being taught associated information such as the role of pollinators.

In the first week the children planted a whole wildflower meadow in a box, as well as a salad in a box.

More recently they have been planting the “three sisters”, a mix of sweetcorn, courgettes and beans.

Ms Thomas said the oldest sister, the sweetcorn, stands tall in the middle, while the bean climbs up the sweetcorn to reach the sun, and the last sister, the courgette, covers the ground preventing weeds from coming up.
