ARTWORK created by pupils at a dale school will be on show at Durham County Council’s headquarters this month as part of a project marking Holocaust Memorial day.

Children from Cockfield Primary School were invited to create a memorial flame as part of the project to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust invited organisations, groups and schools around the country to create their own “memorial flame” for the anniversary, which also marks 25 years since the genocide in Bosnia.

Teacher and art co-ordinator Lyndsey Hargraves said the children completed the flame, which is made out of chicken wire, glue-coated paper and topped with red LED lights. She added: “The children did work around the project including learning about the Second World War so they knew about the subject. We set out to find words about hope, which is what the memorial day tries to promote, then using their words we created the flame.

“As part of the project the council asked us to send in photographs of the completed work, which are going to be on display, but we were all delighted when they said they wanted to exhibit the children’s flame as well in county hall.”

The flame was carefully packaged up at the school, before being transported to Durham for the exhibition. As well as the display at County Hall, a memorial service will be held at Durham Cathedral on January 27, between 1pm and 3pm.
