FESTIVE: Money raised from Saturday's fun day will help cover the costs of Cockfield's Christmas lights displays

A FAMILY fun day is being organised to help brighten up a village this Christmas.

Cockfield Christmas Lights Committee is hosting the event this Saturday, August 11, to help raise enough money to cover the cost of putting up and taking down the village’s festive display.

Cockfield Parish Council has allowed the committee to use the recreation ground to host the event, which will take place from 1pm till 5pm.

Committee member Christine Watters said: “It is a few years since we had a summer fete so we have decided to have a fun day for a change.

“We raise money all year round. It is not just a one-off thing. There are so many people in the village who look forward to the lights going up. Every year we need to raise between £6,000 and £7,000 to put them up and take them down. We have always been well supported.”

The day will include a bouncy castle, fancy dress, barbecue, face painting, a chocolate demonstration and craft activities led by volunteers from Teesdale YMCA. There will be a car boot sale, ice-cream, a cake stall, raffle and tombola. Games will be held inside the Pauline Charlton Sports Pavilion.

There will also be a number of stalls in aid of Team Teddy. The family of six-year-old disabled Teddy Berriman, who lives in Copley, are joining in the fun to try and boost their fundraising efforts to buy him a piece of specialist equipment (full details, see story left).

Ms Watters said: “Teddy is a lively and bubbly little boy. It would be lovely for them to raise as much money as they can on the day. We are more than happy to support them.”

Meanwhile, volunteers are being sought to help on the day as well as new committee members who would be willing to spare some of their time throughout the year.

Ms Watters added: “Organising the fun day has been hard work but we are hoping that people will support the work that has gone into it.”

Pitches for the car boot sale cost £5 per car and £7 per van.
