THE magic and wonder of Christmas will come to to the fore in Barnard Castle as children celebrate the start of the festive season this weekend.

The Christingle service will be held at St Mary’s Parish Church, in Barnard Castle,

on Sunday, December 1, at 4pm.

Revd Canon Alec Harding will take the service, which takes place on the first Sunday of advent.

Although Christingles have been happening in England since the 1960s, the idea began in Germany in 1747.Christmas
