CHARACTERS from some of the best known children’s books will be brought to life at Holwick when the village’s third annual scarecrow trail gets underway on Sunday, August 14.

Organiser Jenny Lee said the theme to this year’s trail was decided by her children, Jake and Isla, who are busy finishing off effigies of their favourite characters. This year money raised from the event will go to the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) after previously boosting funds for NHS charities and the Richardson Hospital.

Ms Lee said: “We have 18 in the trail and it is great to see so many people taking the time to make the scarecrows. It’s the most we’ve had and we’ve got some well-known and loved characters for people to spot.

“We decided the first year to raise money for the NHS charities and last year for Richardson Hospital.

“This year we chose GNAAS because we live so far away from the hospitals and it is such a worthwhile case. We just hope that we don’t have to call them for ourselves.”

Entry forms for the trail will be available to buy from G and J Newsagents, in Middleton-in-Teesdale, the Fox and Hounds and Doe Park Caravan Site, in Cotherstone, as well as from outside Cherry Cottage in Holwick. She added: “The trail is completely accessible for everyone.

“It is the perfect fundraiser and a great way to get out doors for a bit of fun. We always do it after Middleton Carnival because we like to support them.”

The children’s book character trail started on Sunday, August 14, and runs for two weeks.
