DAMAGE: Thorngate Mill, Barnard Castle

SECURITY cameras could be installed on the corner of a grade II-listed former mill in Barnard Castle to monitor damage by motorists.
Thorngate Mill was originally a weaving mill in the 19th century.
By the late 1980s the building was used as a book retailers and then stood empty until it was turned into apartments.
The three-storey building, on the banks of the River Tees, is in the town’s conservation area and was converted into apartments 17 years ago with parking for 20 vehicles.
John Walker, of Town and City Management Ltd, has applied for listed building consent to install three security cameras to the north west corner of the building, overlooking the residents’ parking area and driveway.
In an access statement, Mr Walker said: “The access will remain unaltered; the proposed external security cameras will make the pedestrian and vehicular movement around the premises safer.
In a heritage statement Town and City Management Ltd said: “The need for the cameras is due to the damage caused to driveway gates by third party reversing.
“Vehicles regularly use the driveway to reverse onto, prior to making their way back to the town after looking for somewhere to park.
“Having cameras covering the driveway gates and car park would be of benefit in
insurance claims and in general security of the areas.”
