INTERNAL repairs and restoration work have been carried out at Barnard Castle's arts centre while the building has been closed during the Covid-19 lockdown.
Replastering has been done in parts of The Witham and several areas have been redecorated.
The work is a continuation of repairs which began last summer after trustees discovered the centre’s historic drainage system, which has pipes hidden in the walls, was failing, leading to water damage.
Trustee Peter Hodges said: “During this long and distressing period of lockdown, The Witham team has used the closure period to progress its planned programme of restoration and refurbishment of the buildings.
“Historic establishments such as this require constant attention.
“This opportunity to press on with necessary maintenance and improvements without inconvenience to customers, staff and performers has enabled us to make very useful progress.”
Plastering has been carried out in the first floor Witham room and part of the main music hall.
The Witham room, smaller County room, staircase, corridor and toilets have been redecorated.
Mr Hodges added: “We have engaged with the services of Barnard Castle-based tradesmen to carry out the work in progress. This includes a plumber, decorator, plasterer and restoration contractor.
“As a consequence of recent events, passage through the building will change when we re-open in order to maintain social distancing guidelines.
“Planning for this is well advanced and a few alterations are in progress to accommodate the new regime.”
He added: “We are extremely grateful for the dedication and support of staff, volunteers and trustees to help us through this difficult time.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone back safely into The Witham and once again being at the heart of the Barney community.”
