PARISH councillors in Gainford are helping youngsters develop a love for science after giving a school project a financial boost.

Gainford and Langton Parish Council handed over a cheque for £400 to Gainford Primary School’s headteacher Chris Riley at their recent meeting. The school had applied to the parish council’s small grant fund for help towards the cost of a science enrichment week next month.

Councillors agreed to support the event at their February meeting. A total of £350 was donated from the small grant fund as well as an additional £50 from the chairperson’s fund.

Mrs Riley said: “We really appreciate the donation and it will be well used. With school budgets being as tight as they are, particularly for small rural schools, we can offer the basics, but enriching the curriculum is something we try to do term on term. This should also help get the children excited about science as a future career too.”

Youngsters will be given the opportunity to take part in a series of interactive and science themed workshops in school with a focus on topics such as forensics.

Parish council chairwoman Cllr Lisa Johnstone said: “As a council we are 100 per cent behind our school. We value it as a huge asset to our village.”
