A BRIGHT and breezy day made Bowes Show an enjoyable occasion for competitors and visitors alike.
While there may have been a drop in the number of horses taking part, there was a huge number of dogs entered into the canine competition on the day.
Over in the sheep section, a familiar name was once again etched onto the trophy for the best in show this year.
Robert Hutchinson's Swaledale ewe was judged female champion, local champion, breed champion and then later in the day she impressed the other sheep judges to be awarded best in show.
Robert's eight-year-old son Joe is also showing early promise – he picked up the young handler prize in the U10 category and was pipped as champion by 15-year-old Hetty Hutchinson, from Forest-in-Teesdale.
Reserve champion of the field was judged to be a Beltex shown by Ben Cowton, of Tow Law, which had earlier won the title in the any other commercial breed section.
Elsewhere in the sheep competition, there was success for John Thorburn, from East Riggs, near Gretna, in the Zwartble section.
Mr Thorburn lost a leg through cancer of the bone and has only just started showing again.
He has kept Zwartbles since 2006, enjoying success at shows throughout the country.
Due to the measures imposed as a result of equine flu, there were many fewer horses than usual, with the show unable to run classes for Fell Ponies, coloureds and Appaloosas. There were also no driving classes.
Chairman Malcolm Wood said that while organisers had come in for criticism from some quarters with regards to the vaccination programme required for entry into the equine classes, those who had brought horses along had complimented the show on the steps it had taken.
“Overall, it has been a good day with good crowds through the gate,” he said.
A huge queue developed when entries were taken for the dog show, with dozens of people and their four-legged friends lining up to take part in seven classes.
The overall canine champion was Mist, a five-year-old working collie, shown by Penny Wilson, from Boldron.
In the industrial and horticulture tent, secretary Margaret Cooper said entries were about the same as last year, with the judges commenting on the quality being shown.
New this year was the sunflower competition, which proved to be keenly contested.
Those taking part had been given seeds and a pot and were asked to produce their flower on the day – still in the same pot.
The winner was Keith Ettey who sunflower had grown to an amazing 264cm.
