THE sun shone on a good turnout of exhibitors for the 60th annual Stainmore Sheep Show.

In addition to the usual Swaledales, new classes were introduced this year for Herdwick sheep.

There was also a good selection of entries to the children’s and photography sections, which had grown in size for the fourth year running.

The stick entries once again created a fabulous display, with more than 100 on show and new exhibitors were welcomed in all sections.

In the Swaledale classes, Stanley and Pat Brogden, of Brough, won both overall champion and local champion, with their son Thomas in reserve.

The title of champion small breeder was won by Trevor Bainbridge of Brough Sowerby. The Herdwick champion went to Frank Brennand, from Chapel le Dale, near Hawes, with Nikki Race and Simon Witham, from Bowes, as reserve. Mr Brennand said he had kept Herdwicks for the past six or seven years and now had a flock of 50 breeding ewes.

The industrial section saw Megan Pedley gaining overall points with Janet Hutchinson securing best exhibit with her tray bake.

The photography competition was won by Julie Tunstall while Lewis Staley gained the most points in the children’s section. The best stick was won by Bob Cannon.

Mrs Hutchinson, the show's vice-president, stepped in to president’s role on the day and presented the cups, making a speech thanking everyone for attending and praising the efforts of judges, exhibitors, sponsors and all the committee members.

She explained that it was the 60th show and that her father was instrumental in developing the event in the early days.

She said she has always loved to be involved and that it was great to see the show continuing to grow, hoping for its continued success for the next 60 years.

This year the show had a new cup that Pat Brogden donated to mark her presidential year – for best sheep in Stainmore parish – and she was thanked by the committee for her kind contribution.
