GREEN fingered folk in one dale village are hoping to raise more cash than ever when they open up a bumper crop of gardens and allotments as part of a national initiative.

Villagers in Cotherstone raised just short of £3,000 two years ago when they last took part in the National Open Gardens Scheme, which raises money for health related charities.

This year 14 gardens and two allotments will be on show with a wide variety of styles and shapes on Sunday, July 1.

“There are rose gardens, a wildlife style garden, two very productive allotments and many traditional style gardens,” said Ian Brown, one of the co-ordinators for the village, as he prepared his own for the forthcoming event. Five Teesdale artists are taking over the village hall with displays with another two artists exhibiting arts and crafts at Hallgarth House.

The Methodist chapel is also opening up for the event and will have a display on the history of the building.

In addition to this the village has organised two pop up cafes so visitors won’t go thirsty as they tour around.

Admission is £5 with children free. The gardens will be open from 11.30am through until 4.30pm.
