YOUNGSTERS in Bowes enjoyed an afternoon of words, music and laughter during a visit from one of the UK’s best-known contemporary poets.

Ian McMillan, who is otherwise known as the bard of Barnsley, stopped by at Bowes Hutchinson’s Primary School to help pupils get creative with words.

The poet, broadcaster and comedian was joined by Olympic composer Luke Carver Goss who also helped pupils create and sing their own songs.

Headteacher Chris Matthewman said: “The children have really enjoyed it.

“It has been all about creativity and playing with words.

“They have had a ball. This is what Bowes and other small schools are all about,” he added.

“We encourage creativity and the children love to come to school and that is so important.”

The duo’s visit to the school was just before their performance of Words, Music, Glee and Delight, which took place at Bowes and Gilmonby Village Hall earlier this month.

Mr McMillan said: “We’ve loved our time at the school. If we are ever in the area again, we’d love to come back.”
