POPULAR folk group High Force will be hosting an Irish themed fundraiser for Startforth Community Centre on St Patrick’s night, Saturday, March 17, from 7pm to 11pm.

It will feature a mix of Irish tunes, well known songs and plenty of dancing.

Last summer High Force released their Four Pence A Day CD (available in the Teesdale Mercury shop) to warm reviews. With roots in Irish, Scottish and English folk music they are experienced in entertaining a variety of audiences.

Vocalist John Hunt said: “We are delighted to be able to help raise funds for Startforth Community Centre.

“As a former primary school head, I was saddened by the demise of Startforth school but I am really pleased to see that the building continues to be used for educational and social activities.”

A community centre has risen from the ashes of the school which hosts a range of classes and activities.

A new committee has been formed to steer its future development.

Chairwoman Christine Smith said: ‘Losing the school was a real blow to Startforth but we are determined that the building should provide a focus for our growing community.

“We already have daytime and evening yoga classes, keep fit classes, the U3A Music Group, music reading lessons, Euphoria Choir, a lunch club and the Castle Players use the building for rehearsals.

“New activities include ballet lessons starting this month and an art printing course in April.”

On Sunday, March 25, the neighbourhood plan committee will be running a fun afternoon (see story left).

Tickets for the St Patrick’s night fundraiser cost £6 from Colin Clarke on 07802 855604.

Tickets include leek and potato soup and soda bread. Bring your own liquid refreshments.

Mr Clarke is also the contact for enquiries about hiring space at the Startforth Community Centre. He will also put you in touch with activity organisers.
