A YOUNG dale singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is tuning up for a busy couple of weeks during which she will perform at high profile events.

Boldron’s Kirsty McLachlan will open for Katie Doherty and the Navigators at The Witham on Friday, September 13. She will then showcase her skills at the Eggleston Show when she joins others involved in Music at the Heart of Teesdale to bring the curtain down on the day’s events.

Kirsty is a familiar face to supporters of the local music scene. She was lead singer with TCR Teesdale Soul Band and is currently bass player in local band Feedback.

She is a long-standing member of local youth folk group Cream Tees, a familiar face at Folkworks and has recently been recruited into Folkestra, a youth folk ensemble based at the Sage, Gateshead, which draws its members from across the region, and the Durham County Youth Orchestra.

In 2017 she won the Shooting Roots singing competition at Sidmouth Folkweek and her remembrance song Road to Home featured on BFBS forces radio.

She later performed to more than 4,000 people at the Armed Forces Memorial’s tenth anniversary (National Arboretum, Alrewas).

She followed this up with a win in the under-18 category of the national New Roots competition for up-and-coming folk artists.

The teenager also has a raft of festival appearances, including performances at Towersey, Sidmouth and Whitby. North of the border, she has performed with Scottish bands Skippinish and Life O’Riley.

Closer to home, she is currently recording with the support of local musicians Andrew Yeadon and Tom Whittaker at The Hub, in Barnard Castle.

Never one to rest on her laurels, dates for 2020 include Parkfest, Oyster Fest and the Blue Flash Challenge.

Tickets for Friday’s show with Katie Doherty and the Navigators show are £12 in advance and £14 on the door.

The show starts at 7.30pm. Contact The Witham box office on 01833 631107 or go to www.thewitham.org.uk for details.
