THE Castle Players is stirring up a heady brew for its 30th summer production this week with William Shakespeare’s Macbeth – a compelling drama that tells of mystical predictions and kingly ambition.

Director of this year’s production, Laurence Sach, said: “At the time, James VI of Scotland had just become James I of England, and James was fascinated by witchcraft.

“He had even written a book on the subject called Daemonologie, so Shakespeare knew he had a popular theme to include in his play.” Taking on the roles of the Three Witches are Trudi Dixon, Dawn Trevor and Adele Tyler.

“Having introduced so many pupils to Shakespeare’s play over 38 years of teaching it’s a delight to be able play the First Witch,” said ex-English Teacher Ms Dixon. “They were always fascinated by the story and the journey that Macbeth takes.”

“The play has so many familiar lines,” added Ms Trevor. “From the opening, ‘When Shall We Three Meet Again’ to Macbeth’s ‘Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow’. I’m sure everyone will recognise at least some of them.”

Ms Tyler added: “Our Witches are more like Medieval down-and-outs. “It’s a great opportunity for make-up which is always such an enjoyable part of playing a role.”

Macbeth plays in the grounds of The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, until July 14.
