Vehicles impaled by fenceposts
Apr 30, 2002
A
BARNARD Castle postal manager was taken to hospital
on Friday, after a car accident near Cross Lanes, on the A66, left both his van and the other vehicle involved impaled with fence posts.
John Emerson, of Raby Avenue, who sustained injury to his head and shoulder, is now recuperating at home.
The accident happened at about 8.50am when a Ford Escort Royal Mail van, being driven by Mr Emerson, was involved in a collision with a Mercedes Benz E240 car, being driven by a man from Stirling in Scotland.
Both vehicles left the road, taking with them an 120-foot section of hedge and post-and- rail fencing, much of which then pierced both vehicles.
The driver from Scotland also received hospital treatment, for cuts to his right hand. Two fire appliances from Barnard Castle attended the scene when a smell of burning was reported. They righted the Royal Mail van, which had overturned, and made its battery safe; they also made the Mercedes safe.
