Bowlers off the mark

Apr 24, 2002

ON Saturday, 40 Barnard Castle bowlers were

present at the opening of the green in the Bowes Museum park.

Mr Alan Wilkinson, the local historian, gave an interesting talk on the history of the bowling green and the park before bowling the first bowl to officially open the green for the 2002 season. Alan’s wife, Jean, was presented a bouquet of flowers by the ladies’ president, Mrs Margaret Hodgson.

In pleasant weather, Jumbles were then played on all six rinks. Seven players gained maximum points with eventual winner being Winnie Stannard, with Len Metcalfe second, and Vera Carter and Harry Embleton, joint third.

From Saturday, May 4, and each Saturday morning for four weeks, any prospective new members may be attend free coaching sessions on the green between 10am and 12 noon.

Juniors between the ages of 8-10 years-old are also welcome. Bowls and equipment will be supplied free by the bowling club.
