Wheelie bin review plan abandoned

Aug 13, 2003

TEESDALE District Councillors decided this week not to proceed with a review of the refuse collection service.

Last month the Social and Environmental Overview and Scrutiny Committee had recommended that the ongoing problems of the refuse collection service warranted an “urgent review”.

However, at a meeting of the Social and Environmental Policy Committee on Wednesday it was decided that it was too early to carry out such a review and that the next one would not be until the new year.

Mark Ladyman, Director of Community Services, who was present at the meeting, said: “Although there are still a number of irritating problems which are taking longer than expected to sort out, there is a feeling that the main problems have been sorted out. We will continue to try to make the service more efficient.

“On a more positive note, the recycling scheme for households that we have been running has been a big success. The first quarter results show that the recycling rate has gone up by five per cent to 15. 5 per cent. This is one of the highest in the region. We want to thank all Teesdale residents who have participated in the scheme.”

THE recycling roadshow came to Barnard Castle on Wednesday.

The event aims to raise awareness of the many re-cycling schemes offered by local councils.
