A member of the public has been praised after one saw a theft in progress and called police.
Police were called out to Middleton-in-Teesdale when an eagle-eyed resident spotted two men in a van collecting a large amount of cast iron guttering from the side of a house in the village.
The men loaded the metal into the back of a flat-back Ford Transit van at around 1pm.
Going on the information given to them, officers stopped the van and arrested both of its occupants.
One man was released without charge and the other, a man from Houghton-le-Side will be appearing at Bishop Auckland Magistrates on September 7, charged with theft.
Sgt Chris Knox of Barnard Castle Police praised the vigilant member of the public and urged locals to be their ‘eyes and ears’ of their community.
