MORE than 40 school children made a splash at a local sports centre on Saturday when a gold medal-winning swimmer came to town.
Commonwealth medallist Chris Cook visited Teesdale Leisure Centre to promote a new teaching programme, which is aimed at encouraging children to learn how to swim.
The scheme, supported by the Amateur Swimming Association, teaches children about water confidence, and an array of pool-based activities and games.
Mr Cook won a double gold in the 50m breaststroke and 100-metre breaststroke at the 2006 Commonwealth Olympics, also picking up silver in the medley relay.
He spent hours in the pool with the children teaching them some of his medal-winning techniques.
Peter Williamson, assistant manager at the centre, said: “We want to let as many people as possible know about our new swim plan and to encourage residents of all ages to enjoy their local pool.
“The National Teaching Plan aims to get more children in the water. The scheme ‘The Journey Through Aquatics’ uses play in the water to encourage youngsters to learn how to swim and includes activities like diving, ‘swim a song’, water polo and synchronised swimming.
“This is a great way to showcase what’s on offer to local residents.”
The leisure centre’s poolside staff have undergone additional training and are available to speak to parents who are interested in enrolling their children on the course.
