Free sessions for young bowlers

Aug 4, 2010

BARNARD Castle Bowls Club is appealing for young people to try their hand at the game at taster sessions this summer.

And the club, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this season, has plans to start its first dedicated junior section.

The free two-hour sessions at the club’s green in the grounds of the Bowes Museum began at the weekend and run until September.

Youngsters will be shown the basics of the sport, and will have the chance to play fun games like skittles.

“There is the perception that bowls is an older people’s game,” said club secretary Alan Butcher. “Although that’s important because it provides sporting and social opportunities for the elderly, the future of bowls has got to be younger people and we are trying to get them involved.”

With £2,500 of funding from GlaxoSmithKline and from Cllr Barbara Harrison, the club has bought six sets of junior bowls, and has plans to introduce a junior section.

Youngsters who get involved will be able to help design their team kit and will get the chance to compete against junior sections from other clubs.

The sessions takes place at the bowling green at the Bowes Museum on Saturdays and Wednesdays, between 10am and 12 noon until September.
