Memorial plans to be considered

Aug 3, 2010

PARISH councillors in Evenwood are hoping to have a new war memorial built in time for this year’s Remembrance Day.
Two potential designs for the memorial, which can be seen on the internet, have been sent in to Durham County Council for planning approval.
Councillors wanted to erect a new memorial in the centre of the village to enable the community to gather in one place to take part in the Remembrance Day commemorations.
County councillor Stephen Hugill also donated cash from his councillor’s budget towards the project.
Martin Clark from Evenwood Parish Council said: “Two designs have been drawn up and we need to discuss which one we want to go ahead with.
“Once we have planning permission we will get on with the work as we hope to have the memorial completed for this year’s remembrance day. The eleventh of November is a Thursday and our aim is to involve the whole community in the event, especially children.”
The memorial will pay tribute to the land, sea and air services and will feature the full details of the 48 servicemen from the village who lost their lives in the First World War.
