Major search begins for dale’s unsung sporting heroes
Jul 30, 2010
The search is on to find Teesdale’s sporting stars, inspirational coaches and unsung heroes.
County Durham Sport has launched a new awards scheme to recognise and celebrate those who make a real contribution to sport and physical activity in Teesdale and Wear Valley.
“Volunteers in sport are dedicated and provide hours of opportunities that often goes unrecognised,” said George Richardson, community sports network officer with Durham County Council.
“The aim of the awards is to recognise as many clubs and individuals in Teesdale and Wear Valley as possible and promote their role in the local community.”
The Mercury has teamed up with the event organisers and will profile some of the local nominees and award winners. They will then be put forward for the seventh County Durham Sport Awards Dinner at the Ramside Hall Hotel in October.
“A local event that leads into the county awards will enable us to recognise grass roots sport for both adults and young people, as well as physical activity achievements,” said Mr Richardson.
The categories for the 2010 awards are: Coach of the Year; Young Coach of the Year (under 21); Sports Club of the Year; Junior Sports Club of the Year; Sporting Achievement of the Year; Contribution to Sport; Volunteer of the Year; Young Volunteer of the Year (under 21). There are also awards for contributions to PE and school sport for both primary and secondary schools.
The Physical Activity Achievement of the Year award will recognise those who have overcome a barrier, inspired others or achieved the unexpected. And the Contribution to Physical Activity award will honour those who have made a difference and had a positive impact on people’s lives by providing opportunities for physical activity.
