Two 'voices of Teesdale' land roles on television

Mar 2, 2010

FROM the airwaves of Teesdale into the homes of the North East, two local DJs have been cast in a new TV advert that will soon be seen by hundreds of thousands.

Ian Kirkbride and Katey Wallace from Radio Teesdale both feature in a new ad for Energy Efficient Windows and Conservatories Ltd that will be broadcast in the ITV Tyne Tees region from later this month.

Based on the classic Frost Report sketch on class, featuring John Cleese and Ronnies Barker and Corbett, the ad features three actors discussing the relative merits of their windows.

Ian, the Castle Players regular and Barnard Castle town crier, plays a version of the Ronnie Barker
character – with “middle class” windows – while Katey provides the voiceover.

Ian, who hosts the breakfast show on Radio Teesdale, explained how it all came about.

“I have been doing amateur dramatics and shows for years and I used to be in Darlington Operatic Society,” he said. “I heard they were doing Jesus Christ Superstar, so I went along to rehearsal, and there was a guy there looking for actors for a TV advert.”

And after a read-through, he got the part and headed off for filming.

“We turned up a very cold factory on Teesside, with not a great deal in the way of facilities,” said Ian. “For 30 seconds worth of advert we were there from 4pm to 8.30pm.”

And Ian recommended Sony  Award-nominated Katey for the voiceover, which she recorded in studios in Newcastle.

“It was fun to do and it is another string to the bow,” Katey said. “The only reason I got the job is 100 per cent because of Radio Teesdale.”

The advert, filmed by Edwards Creative Media, is set to be broadcast on ITV Tyne Tees from March 7.
