Work to replace sewage pipe causes disruption

Mar 2, 2010

WORK to upgrade the sewerage network and replace a section of sewer pipe in Barnard Castle has begun.

The work has resulted in the closure of Thorngate bridge and the installation of temporary traffic lights.

Northumbrian Water is installing 290 metres of new sewer pipe from The Lendings pumping station, westwards, towards Thorngate Bridge. The pipe will run along the side of the bridge and along a section of Thorngate to Gray Lane.

Paul Rutter, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: “The four- month scheme is being carried out after the old sewer pipe, which was buried in the bed of the River Tees, burst.

“Residents should be reassured that we will do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum.  As part of this commitment, while we work on Thorngate Bridge, we will be working seven days a week and the bridge will remain open over the Easter period (Friday, April 2, to Sunday, April 11).”

- The bridge will be closed from March 9 for up to four weeks. It will close again from April 12 for up to two weeks.

- A section of road north of Thorngate Bridge on the west-bound carriageway    has been closed and will remain so for up to five weeks.

- A section of footpath approaching the bridge on the north bank, will be closed on April 12 for up to two weeks
- There will be temporary traffic lights on Gray Lane    from May 10 for up to three weeks.
